The style of extended crest and arm rails is a form of official's hat chair. The design bears a resemblance to the hat worn by Song dynasty (960CE - 1279CE) officials.

This chair has very generous size and stylised design. The back support has an open carving of an immortal god riding a mythical beast called a qilin. There is a popular saying "the qilin delivers children" so its presence as a motif is a wish for newly married couples to have children.

The original plum red lacquer shows the natural signs of wear due to years of constant use.
