More detail

The deep plum red lacquer and the fluid flow of the arms are the stand out features of these chairs. They invite you to sit down and share a warm drink with a close friend.

The modest dimensions mean they add character without taking up too much space in the room. Like low back armchairs they would also work well incorporated with artwork. The chairs have diverse purposes: use one next to a coffee table and the other in a bedroom as an occasional seat or clothes stand.

The chair derives its name from a type of hat worn by Song dynasty officials. These particular chairs would have been used around the house in relaxed domestic settings. A century of use has seen the lacquer worn in places revealing the grain of the underlying timber. The back support has a carved medallion of a longevity character.
