Artist Petros Papoulis in his studio, Canberra

A Canberra-based artist and Queanbeyan teacher, Petros Papoulis initially studied at Goulburn C.A.E. He majored in visual arts and graduated in 1976 with a Diploma in Teaching.

He moved to Newcastle and pursued his interest in art by completing a Diploma in Art Education course at Newcastle C.A.E.

Petros furthered his art practice by undertaking postgraduate studies at the Newcastle School of Visual and Performing Arts. In 1984 he received his Graduate Diploma in Art, majoring in painting.

His earlier works were assemblage pieces which combined found and made objects. He currently uses a variety of media, with his primary processes being drawing and painting.

Petros Papoulis has a long-held fascination with the water’s edge.  He likes to observe how we interact with it, how we use it, what happens there and how the elements can affect it.

When he is at the water’s edge he is conscious of the following: stillness; transient moments; mood; light; movement; shadows; reflections; geometry; texture; structures; decay; metaphors; the everyday; and the ways in which he interprets this environment.

It is where he feels curious and engaged.

A finalist in the 2020 Goulburn Art Award, Petros has exhibited in selected group shows in N.S.W. and the A.C.T. He has participated in virtual exhibitions and held solo exhibitions in Canberra and Queanbeyan. His drawings, paintings and 3D artworks can be found in a number of private collections in Australia and in the public collection of the Goulburn Mulwaree Council.

His work is inspired by people, locations, and personal experiences.
