Artist Statement

My wife of 52 years was admitted to hospital with cancer a week before lockdown. I was unable to visit her for 10 weeks. La Nuit is a sculpture we bought earlier this year maintaining the practice of an annual art purchase throughout our marriage. Our love of Maillol’s (French 1861-1949) work and the fact that it was our most recent joint purchase made it a natural choice for a meditative piece to work on – a way to feel close as well as calm. It is graphite and charcoal on Arches hot pressed paper.
