Lacquered cabinet on base
$2,650.00
Early 20th century
- elm
- 93cm wide x 50cm deep x 99cm high
This is a fascinating cabinet because of its design. Very early storage pieces were boxes that evolved to become chests. The chest grew in size to include a base that kept the bottom of the chest slightly above the ground. This meant the contents wouldn’t get damp from the ground. Over time the chest changed and instead of a lid doors were used to access the interior. And so the cabinet came into being.
This cabinet has a base that resembles the base of a large linen chest. With its doors it is reminiscent of those very early period cabinets that had a base before the use of legs. The base has fine chrysanthemum carving that represents a wish for long life. The lacquer finish is in very good condition.
