Artist Statement
The NOSTALGIA series takes inspiration from the painterly and nostalgic splendour of vintage floral fabrics and billowing mid-century summer dresses.
About the Artist
I am a multidisciplinary artist, working both as a designer and visual artist. I work in sunny Sydney, Australia. I am fortunate to have beautiful nature, waterways and wildlife in my inner-city neighbourhood where inspiration surrounds me.
I work in oils, acrylics and collage. My work explores nature and the human-made and how these elements intertwine. My paintings are informed by the wild nature that flourishes in my garden and the gardens, parks and streets of my neighbourhood – and if it can’t be found nearby, I love to travel to find inspiration.
I have loved drawing and painting for as long as I can remember, I draw and paint every day – studying nature provides me with an endless supply of ideas and inspiration; spending large chunks of time observing is key to the work of a costume designer and a visual artist. It is a gift to be able to focus in on our everyday life and find the beauty, the cracks and the layers of living.
I adore pattern and colour – and I especially enjoy working in limited and unusual colour combinations. I have always loved texture – whether it is in impasto or collage layers, there will always be a sense of texture, pattern and depth in my work. I love to respond intuitively to what the paint, shapes and lines are doing on the canvas – I thrive on the surprises and the challenges of work unfolding spontaneously.
My studio is home to my favourite things; every kind of paint, a multitude of brushes, vintage vases, textile swatches, and object d-art. I salvage anything that might be a future inspiration.
Selling a painting is a huge honour. I will never tire of the thrill it gives me – knowing that my work will be bringing someone else pleasure, is such a gift.
