During a trip to the Kimberley region I took a cruise down the mighty Ord River. Massive rocks lined the river banks and fallen trees provided perches for birds. Rounding a bend in the river a golden glow emanated from behind a tangle of tropical growth weeping into the water. Faint ripples on the still water were the only way to distinguish reflections from reality. The clarity and depth of greens and gold were interrupted by a small flash of red which I realised was an old rowboat. Over the last few years I have wondered when I would paint from my references, but it was the quietude brought on by “Covid lockdown” which finally allowed me to calmly paint this tranquil scene.
